“Do not ask your children
to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable,
but it is the way of foolishness.
Help them instead to find the wonder
and the marvel of an ordinary life.
Show them the joy of tasting
tomatoes, apples and pears.
Show them how to cry
when pets and people die.
Show them the infinite pleasure
in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself.”
So much of my journaling lately has been about my role as a mother, and thing I’m thinking about parenting. Thanks to @thrivinginmotherhood.podcast for always providing much inspiration and food for thought ✨ and thanks to @jencarter316 (my mum) for sending me this poem.
This poem means a lot to me - helping my children to be contented in the everyday is something I really want to instill in them both.
I’ve always been able to find joy in small things, and I know it’s been helpful in this season of my life, in particular. It’s why I share pictures of the flowers where I walk each day to preschool, and of the yummy food I eat and why I tell you the silly songs going round in my head. It’s why I like to make sure my clothes give me joy (pardon the Konmari reference, though I do love her), why I plant flowers in my garden, and why I love to light candles at mealtimes. There is SO much joy to be found in those small things. And JOY is so important to our family.
Where do you find joy? Do you strive to teach your children joy and contentment?
