The Shepard’s hut... 🇺🇦
Setting off we had no idea how exactly we were going to find this place.
We’d heard rumours that deep in the Carpathian Mountains were Shepard’s huts, disused in the winter, where adventurous hikers could spend the night with a roof over their heads in relative warmth.
We were very intrigued... but the problem was how to get there?! In step @bohdankozhushko who we had connected with on instagram via our usual mechanic the week before. Bohdan is a Ukrainian adventure enthusiast and very kindly offered to take us there using his local knowledge.
And luckily we didn’t attempt this by ourselves! To say we went off the beaten track would be inaccurate as there was no track. For 5 hours he led us through thick snow covered forests, over frozen rivers and deep into the mountains.
We arrived at the hut just as the sun set, where we holed up, making a fire in the home made wood burner and eating super noodles, chuffed that our plan had come together, we had made it!
After a night sleeping fully clothed on a hard wooden bed, we woke early. As we started the hike back, the cloud lifted over the mountains and we could see where we were for the first time.... and it was spectacular, mile upon mile of untouched wilderness in every direction.
All things considered, the feeling that we had that morning was one of the best. A mixture of excitement, relief, awe and amazement.
Thank you @bohdankozhushko for taking us leap of faith on us and showing us this beautiful part of the world! - 5 minutes ago
