Ohhhhh...ya girl is in ketosis! How do I know? Well, I’m a special human. I’m part of the 3% female population of Asian descent in their 20s to 30s that commonly get keto rash. It’s so fun...NOT! Doesn’t matter because I’m here for the benefits from day 4 and 5.
Besides weight loss there are a number of other benefits to taking a break from eating. I’ll share a few here to help explain why I chose to do a 5 day fast:
-In the first 24-48 hrs, your body will burn glycogen (sugar) for energy.
-Day 3, once glycogen is depleted your body will begin to burn stored fat for energy (#ketosis ).
-Day 4, studies have shown that your metabolism can increase up to 10%.
-Day 5, your body begins to repair itself at the cellular level (#autophagy ). This is where you want to be to reap the true benefits of fasting.
A couple more tips for a successful EF. Water and salt sticks are your bffs while fasting. Water helps to suppress hunger and prevent dehydration. Salt sticks replace electrolytes in your body and prevent muscle cramps. Be sure to have both on hand when you do an extended fast.
You will be drinking lots of water and it might get a little boring. To break the monotony, it’s good to have flavored water like La Croix or Hint water on hand. Zevia won’t work because it has stevia in it. Natural sweeteners are a no go and neither is fruit juice. Approved flavored water help trick the mind into thinking you’re eating. If it’s meal time and you’re constantly thinking of food, have a flavored water and it should quiet your cravings.
Lastly, it also helps to rid your kitchen of foods that may be tempting. Hot Cheetos are a big NO NO when I’m fasting.
I’m 75 hrs into my extended water fast and have had a total of 480 oz of water during this time. I’m in ketosis because I have rashes in all the typical areas. I ran 6 miles this morning and it was done 100% through willpower. I’m still not hungry, but I’m feeling low on energy so I’m taking it easy.
Have a great rest of your weekend!
