A decade ago, on Saturday 7th February 2009, Victoria was devastated by the Black Saturday bushfires. Days later my chopper pilot, who had been helping with the water bombing, flew me across the original track of the fire. I was shocked by the decimation of the landscape, transformed into little more than a gallimaufry of graphic patterns.
‘877.00m E 145° 12' 31.12'S 037° 25' 15.95', 2009’ (the coordinates include the elevation of the helicopter above sea level) is now in the Janet Holmes à Court Collection and was a rare colour image in a black and white shoot.
Now in 2020 Australia is on fire. It’s a national disaster and our government needs to step up with a permanent solution. A program to reduce bush fires in the short term and a complete long term revision of our climate change policy is needed urgently.
