I have purchased some of the yarn shown in this picture, and the main indication was of "bamboo yarn" "natural fibers". Then, later on I realized that in very small letters, was the information: 50% bamboo viscose 50% cotton.
Have you purchased any products with this label: "bamboo viscose" or "viscose from bamboo " or rayon from bamboo" ? Do you know what it means?
Well, if you, like me, do not have a good knowledge of the bamboo manufacturing process, these labels do not help much. So, I searched the internet and found that the way the bamboo is turned into fabric, in general, is by braking up and dissolving the bamboo in a solution; then this solution is pressed into fibers and cooled. Once this as happened the fibers are spun into threads and eventually woven into fabric. The devil is on the detail, as always. What kind of solution is used in this process?
It appears that most businesses put the bamboo chips in a stew of caustic chemicals: carbon sulfide, sodium hydroxide and sulfuric acid. These chemicals are very corrosive and damaging for the environment and destroy the natural characteristics of the bamboo fibre. Many of these chemicals end up in the bamboo derived products we buy. Some companies claim they use another method, that do not uses these corrosive chemicals and that their products are eco-friendly, but these claims seem to be untrue, generally. If a bamboo fiber is made by a mechanical-bacterial process similar to that used with flax to produce linen, it is sometimes called "bamboo linen". It seems that hemp and organic cotton are better alternatives to rayon, no matter its origin. I also found that the workers get serious health harm from the chemicals inhaled (carbon disulfide): psychosis, heart attacks, liver damage and blindness. I have learned something new and useful, I hope it is useful for most of you, because it seems not many people are aware of this problem.
