Once upon a time... Yiwu used to be a very poor area. This mean that investment was needed and was based on growing market needs. Around 30 years ago, investors were looking for farmers to grow coffee for the growing needs of the industry and convinced a few locals to clear their land and plant coffee. Unfortunately, the coffee industry paid (and still pays) peanuts and the investment came to nothing substantial for the locals. On the other hand, Yiwu tea is generally much higher demand and causes much less damage to the local land... some farmers now have young tea trees instead of old tea trees as a result.
Still, there are a few coffee trees left, growing to 3-5 meters tall, left unmanaged and unpicked. Curious as to how these beans would taste with some really good small batch processing. Shame we don't quite have the expertise nor equipment but it's fun to try as we patiently wait for this year's gushu - the lack of rain suggests it's gonna be a long wait... #yiwumountaintea #premiumtea #coffee #organic #natural #mountainlife #handpicked #handmade #homemade - 7 minutes ago
