#mauaosupclub FAQs No.7 - "Is stand up paddling hard? Everyone makes it look so easy!“ My answer to this question is always - Everyone is different.
Some people pick it up easily, others take a little more time.
I find, whatever is going on in one's mind will determine how easy a start it is for them.
But for everyone, the more time you spend on a board, the easier it becomes, the stronger you get, and the more relaxed you feel.
So patience is a true virtue with stand up paddling. And a great lesson for life in general.
There are a few things that make the start a better experience though:
🎉 Having a suitable board to begin on is important. A lot of people have been put off by starting out on an unsuitable board. You need something stable and accommodating.
🧨 Choose suitable conditions. Winds, tides, water texture play a part in the enjoyment of your experience. So try to avoid rough conditions on your first go.
🎊 Take a lesson. There is more to SUP than just standing on a board and paddling. Starting out is less about the board and more about the paddle and what to do with it. The paddle doesn't just propel you forward, it has a much greater purpose, as you will find in taking a lesson
🎁 Have patience. The key is to relax. So don't expect too much on your first go, because relaxing isn't always easy to achieve. Your body takes its own time to find its centre and relax.
🎈 Clear the mind. Hopping on a board with self-defeating stories, or laden with troubles, will make things more difficult. Having said that, it also sorts your mind out too. So if you do come with a frazzled mind, you can look forward to a beautiful journey ahead with SUP.
