I'm sure many of you homeschooling moms are familiar with the Montessori method for math. You can buy the number beads through many little shops, etsy, or a Montessori supply shop. But I worked with what I had. Old pony beads from my tween days and pipe cleaner. .
When I started reading about this method- as a former teacher and child who hated math- I realized how brilliant it is. Teaching 1:1 correspondence is hard. It is really easy to teach a child to count but that is just memorization. Its also 'easy' to get them to pick up an object while they say the memorized numbers. But then You have to teach them to write the numbers and read the numerals... And that is when you realize a child has no idea what 4 means. .
The Montessori method accomplishes all of that at one time. Students see the numeral, count the beads, learn to write the numeral, and develop 1:1 correspondence at the same time. And it takes maybe 15 minutes. .
I just tested her on 1-5 today and she gets it. She can read the numerals, write them, count out a given number of objects, and correspond them. I share because teaching math was so daunting to me until I found this. I hope it helps one of you!! - 4 hours ago
