A new study just published in the Journal of Proteonomics showed that Intermittent Fasting may have anti cancer properties

The study had 14 participants who fasted from sun up to sun down for 30 consecutive days. .
.".and resulted in a serum proteome protective against cancer, obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, inflammation, Alzheimer's disease, and several neuropsychiatric disorders."
"These findings suggest that intermittent fasting from dawn to sunset can be a preventive and adjunct therapy in cancer, metabolic syndrome and Alzheimer's disease and several neuropsychiatric diseases."

Interestingly, there was NO CHANGE in caloric intake or weight loss in these participants. .
There have been smaller studies done of fasting and cancer patients, showing that fasting is safe and may reduce toxicity from chemotherapuetic agents.  There are currently numerous ongoing larger clinical trials assessing the anticancer effects of fasting in cancer patients. Please read this! There is so much misinformation about carbs. Please remember, veggies & fruit are carbs! Anything that breaks down to sugar as its base form is a carb & our bodies/brains still rely on that as a main fuel source.

Carbohydrates are the primary and preferred source of fuel for our body, a well known concept in nutrition, which is why they are so crucial in sport and fitness for performance and development. Just because it’s natural, doesn’t mean it’s safe: ESPECIALLY when it comes to pregnancy.

Pregnancy often comes with a desire to be more ‘natural’, whether it’s trying to avoid unnecessary interventions or trying to be healthier. And although I’m totally with it, I want you to do it in a way that’s safe. Naturopathic doctors are trained in the safety & usage of ‘natural’ medicines and we can help you navigate this.

It’s estimated that at least 1/2 of women use herbs during their pregnancy. But in terms of research, there’s very few high quality studies on herbal use in pregnancy. This is because it’s unethical to conduct studies to determine if a herb is safe by separating women into a study—just in case there are adverse effects. Most research & knowledge on herbs in pregnancy come from a significant body of historical, empirical & observational studies. Some important points:
⠀⠀
🌱Herbal constituents can pass through the placenta & could affect the baby.
🌱The best way to use herbs in pregnancy: don’t use any in the 1st trimester unless medically indicated (e.g. nausea/vomiting) & supervised by your ND. ⠀⠀
🌱The physiological & metabolic changes associated with pregnancy could change how herbs act in your body. ⠀⠀
🌱There are limited herbs that are truly considered safe. There are some herbs that are considered safe ONLY if taken for a limited time, ONLY if absolutely needed & ONLY if you don’t have a contraindication (e.g. high blood pressure). And there are some herbs that you absolutely shouldn’t take. ⠀⠀
Take the guess work out, keep yourself & baby safe by asking your naturopathic doctor.

This is me and my mum. Every Christmas my family and I spend a good time together. Even though I haven't had the best relationship with my parents as a teen.

A lot has changed since then and we understand each other better than ever.

I know many kids have and had a hard time with their family. I'm talking drug abusive, violent families etc etc.

"Balance" can be a little bit of a trigger word for me. This year, I decided to challenge my belief systems around this action word, and made it my #wordoftheyear2020.
.
In the not so distant past, #balance , brought up images of walking on a thin beam, tightrope, etc.
.
I started to wonder why I drew up fearful situations when thinking about, or hearing this word. Why did it make me feel like I was hanging on to something for dear life?
.
Turns out, those thoughts come from a difficult time in my life over two decades ago. I have done much mental- emotional-spiritual work, but stuff like this sometimes pokes its head up. #peelingtheonion
.
When I picked this as my 2020 word, I reframed it by picking some new images-- things that I love & enjoy side-by-side. Instead of towing the line between them, they shrink or grow (like Alice in Wonderland) based on what is most needed that day, or even that moment.
.
I realized that balance is more like that set of training wheels on my first bicycle. In life, that may be help from a business coach, a mentor, making honest pros/cons lists, an app on my phone... When I am finally able to find my own center, the balance, between situations, tasks, and such, I no longer need the extra set of wheels. But when I run into something new, I know where they are and how to use them.
.
What does "balance" bring up for you? If it's a fearful image, I hope you are also able to reframe the concept into something you can use to support the progress you hope for in your life.

Smoking dat good ayurveda ishhhhh! Inhaling trifula smoke (only a few times) through each nostril is done after Nasyam treatments and after Eye treatments to purify and clear up congestion in lungs. Both treatments are painful...and maybe a little strange but you feel amazing and cleared out after! For a full eye treatment, first you rinse the eyes with trifula water (mildly stings), then you put one drop of Elaneer Kuzhampu in each eye (a thick brown liquid that really stings for about 2 minutes, then your eye feels minty and then all the junk comes out of your eye into the corners and your eye looks shiny!), after there is a green paste you can put over eye lids and let sit for about 15 minutes. If you have a more serious infection you can also soak your eyes in ghee. After you inhale trifula smoke in the nose and out the mouth-I will archive stories with pictures of all these steps in my India Highlights. For nose treatment first your upper torso is steamed and massaged with oil, then 4 drops of Anutailam are poured in each nostril and you inhale it up to your sinuses and spit it out mouth (painful). A light massage done to encourage drops up the sinus. You keep spitting up mucus for about 10 minutes after. Then you gargle with tumeric and salt water, and then inhale 2 puffs of Triful smoke through each nostril and out the mouth. Both your eyes and respiratory system feel super clear and clean after- it’s really amazing and worth the pain of the procedure haha. .
