Thanks to @australianceramics for posting our work - welcome new folk!
Can we talk making black work? @northcotepotterysupplies recently posted about the new @keaneceramics black midfire clay, and I’d love to weigh in with my thoughts.
1) This isn’t the black midfire clay. It’s @keaneceramics white raku, which has been wheelthrown upside down aka the @simonefraserceramics method of making. See that delicate foot at the bottom? Wheelthrown. Visualise the shape shown without the hand pinching changing the form, turn it upside down, and that’s what you throw, starting with the widest hollow form, then narrowing to your foot. Super fun, and as a beginner thrower, those off centred bits, wobbles and human weirdness *added* to what I was making.
After making the form, it’s sprayed with porcelain to give a smooth surface that takes glazes better, and just generally makes for a more luxurious piece. After bisque, outside is heftily coated in blackwattle earwig black - the blackest underglaze I could find. Inside is that @nas_au favourite cesco metallic brush on earthernware in silver. After firing, @liquid_quartz_sealer is used on the outside for waterproofing, because I wanted to keep that black velvety goodness.
It’s a lot of fooling around, but given the end result, I’m happy with it.
2/3) Keanes midfire pinchpot. There’s a TAFE school glaze, Cols Black(scroll back and you’ll meet the infamous Col of Cols Black fame). It’s glossy, a teeny bit transparent, and breaks green on edges. It’s *awesome* over a black clay. Mother of pearl lustre over the top of cols black is also rather luxe.
4) The biggest downside as shown by this test tile c/o @manlyclaystudio is that the keanes black clay naked, fired, is a dark brown. If you want dark, gothic darth vader black blackest black, midfire is not your end destination, but *might* help get you there, depending on what you’re making, your end purpose, and if buying a stained clay around double of price tag of unstained is what you’re after. ..
