Star Wars: A New Hope is just iconic. It has some of the most recognisable characters and performances ever: Alec Guinness plays the wise Jedi Obi Wan Kenobi brilliantly; @hamillhimself really shines as he brings the relatable protagonist Luke Skywalker to life; Harrison Ford is hilarious and Charming as Han Solo; and Carrie Fisher gives Princess Leia an incredibly strong and feisty attitude that’s so fun to watch.
This movie’s plot is simple, but effective, and this movie shines in making the absolute most out of this narrative. It builds up this universe so perfectly throughout the first act, with various droids and creatures, and how you see the various atmospheres, from a simple moisture farm to a shady cantina. It also fleshes out Luke’s character brilliantly, with him looking at the twin stars still being one of the most beautiful and perfect visual ways to show his goal of leaving Tatooine. And the way he has to look at his dead Aunt and Uncle’s bodies before deciding his path hits hard.
Despite these darker moments (which are brilliant as they really flesh out the story and characters), the film is one thing - and that is fun. I loved getting to see all the characters grow to stand each other so that they could complete the mission, and Luke, Han, and Leia’s bickering made the scenes on the Death Star much more unique.
The finale is also thrilling, with the brilliant effects, score, and editing working so well together to deliver a satisfying conclusion.
However, I’m not saying the film is perfect. One thing this movie really lacks in is in the villain department. Don’t get me wrong, Darth Vader is great and his introductory scene is so good, but his character in this single movie is shallow, same with Grand Moff Tarkin.
Finally, I think that the movie handles Luke’s journey poorly at times. His ultimate goal is to be a rebel pilot, but the first time he ever flies anything is in the finale. The end of the film. And we’re only told it, not shown it, throughout the rest of the movie. So that could’ve been better.
Overall, this is an incredible and iconic sci-fi film, with lovable characters, just not quite as perfect as people say it is
