The Ipswich Sparrow (Passerculus princeps) - a subspecies of the much more common Savannah Sparrow. These pale, beach adapted birds favor the sanctuary of the dunes and feed on a variety of spartina seeds and other cordgrass throughout the winter. There's something about the Ipswich that gives a distinct character to the beach, where icy winds blow over the desolate plain, they prevail, unaffected by the elements. Everyday, they traverse amongst the grass like little mice, fighting to survive as they scrap the debris for seeds. Their streaked, creamy tan color allows them to perfectly blend in with their surroundings, unseen.
