film spotlight - Fantastic Four (2015)
director: Josh Trank
Director Josh Trank and 20th Century Fox completely nailed this Fantastic Four reboot. This film is a masterpiece and that is a fact! There is no denying that this is the film that gave rise to the modern era of phenomenal comic book films like Suicide Squad, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, X-Men: Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix, Justice League, Venom, Thor: The Dark World, The Incredible Hulk, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Transformers: The Last Knight, Joker, Casablanca, Parasite, Sonic the Hedgehog, Ratatouille, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and The Great Wall. I say this with all of my heart: 2015’s Fantastic Four reboot film paved the way for modern cinema. The visual effects are top-tier. The story is so full of life and emotion. The dialogue is so believable that I would have mistaken this motion picture for a documentary had I not known better. Now, allow me to just speak of the film’s characters in only the highest regard. First and foremost, the actors who portray these characters deliver every part of the script with intense passion. Their chemistry is almost tangible, too. Next, the dynamic between the titular superhero team is full of heart, contrasting with the film’s sinister villain, Doctor Doom, in the best way. Speaking of the villain, it would be impossible for me to not mention the impressive writing that fleshes out his powers and his motivations. I must admit that when I experienced this film, I believed that Victor Von Doom’s abilities and motivation were unclear because of lazy writing, but I realized soon after that I was so wrong. The fog that surrounds these aspects of the Fantastic Four villain is clearly intentional - a powerful statement made by the filmmakers to emphasize that this is a man who cannot be understood. That, combined with the fantastic dynamic of the film’s heroes, is already enough to take this film to heights that no film has ever reached before. Honestly, this film achieves such greatness that I do not even know a single word that I may use to describe it... Wait. I think I got it.
