I was remembering this hike today as one of my favourites, despite nearly being trampled over by 50 cows 😫
I posted a picture from this hike almost a year ago and wrote about the mishaps of my adventure:
Not all moments were as halcyon as portrayed here. I was chased by roughly 50 cows. Yes, that really happened.
We decided to go off the planned route from the credible national trust website, believing it would be more scenic to walk along the river instead - I wouldn't be an aimless wanderer if I didn't aimlessly wander right?
This led to us to enter private farming land on our remapped route 🙄, and what do you find on farms? We were suddenly (🙄🙄) filled with a vision of cows charging towards us.
My friend as cool as a cucumber, or more likely as oblivious as my 2 year old cousin suggested that we continue ahead. I was incredulous, "TOWARDS THEM?!" She claimed the stream that flowed alongside us would stop these raging cows. I looked at her in horror, this "stream" was as deep as my thumb, it was more a trickle of water. FYI there's more deaths by cows than there are by shark attacks, I researched the statistics after our (spoiler!) survival.
We started backing away cautiously but as fast as we could towards the gate we'd come from. As soon as we were over that, we ran, not like our lives depended on it. Our lives depended on it.
We ended up in a marshy wheat field, not being able to see through us or above us. Our feet sank in with every step, just what exactly were we doing? This was a pretty apt reflection of our impeccably sharp wit and intellect. And so we trudged on, only to come across the other side and find the same raging cows galloping towards us upon our sight.
This time, there was a deep set train track that we clambered to the other side of, and away we kept going till we found roads, buildings, indication that we were back to civilisation. Finally believing we were safe from death by cow, we celebrated with a spot of fish and chips.
I must say every time we hike together, we are always in some predicament, some far too embarrassingly stupid to say out loud. I do not suggest ever coming hiking with us. It may be your last. - 4 minutes ago
