This is a big deal in my house these days. My spouse and I are rearranging most of my son’s treatment to be in line with this educational goal. We want his nervous system, including - and especially - the part that makes him nervous, to become his ally. We want him to learn to work with it, not against it.
We’ve had to revise some of our thoughts about our goals. We are asking questions - What are our priorities for him, and for our family? How much do those match with what it seems like other people think is important, and how much do we even care about that?
Education isn’t always about academics. It’s about knowing how to live with yourself in the world. Only when that internal mystery is solved for can you truly and fully participate in, learn about, and love the external world. ⠀⠀
Keeping a calm nervous system is the key to turning your higher thinking brain. So many of my clients’ kids struggle in school because they are expected to learn even when their thinking brain is switched off. ⠀⠀
One of the most important tools I teach my clients is how to make an ally of their own bodies and all the feelings that happen there. Then they can teach that same skill to their kids. ⠀⠀
If you have a high need kiddo who is battling their anxious brain all the time, call me. I’ll help you make peace, and then you can help your kiddo find more peace. - 7 minutes ago
