Buen Camino is the modern-day greeting used by Pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago yet there is another greeting.
An ancient greeting.
One used on the Camino in medieval times.
Ultreia is a Latin word meaning “beyond” and goes a little deeper than the usual Buen Camino. Ultreia was a means of encouraging pilgrims to keep going, reaching beyond or heading onwards.
Medieval Pilgrims greeted each other with “Ultreia, Suseia, Santiago” meaning beyond, upwards, Santiago.
Some say the word was used in the same way as Hallelujah upon reaching Santiago.
A beautiful word that has an ancient feel to it. Another part of the Camino culture and history that lives on in modern times.
