A couple of weeks ago I shared that I was able to nearly double my productivity by shifting my 8 hours of sleep forward 1.5-2 hours.
A lot of people told me a variation of the following..."but I don't get tired until midnight..." If you want to get to bed earlier, but aren’t getting tired until 5-6 hours after the sun goes down, you may need to assess your night-time activities.
Over the next few posts, I'll discuss a few factors that can affect when you get tired, this week we talk about stimulation.
One culprit can be excessive stimulation, caffeine is one of the biggest players in this issue, so the first thing to try is having a caffeine-free day and see if the problem persists.
If you find that you get tired at an appropriate time without caffeine, it’s up to you to figure out how late in the day you can take it before it starts messing with your sleep, or if you can have it at all.
Another factor can be mental stimulation. If you have a hard time getting your mind to shut up so that you can sleep, it might help to jot down a quick to-do list for the next day, this is a great way to de-clutter your mind before sleep.
If your thoughts aren’t “things I mustn’t forget to do” related, but are keeping you up nonetheless, I highly recommend journaling, I’ve lost count of the amount of time a quick word-vomit on the page has sent me off to sleep after tossing and turning for an hour or so.
Also, reading a book or meditating instead of playing highly engaging video games or watching movies right before bed can help to bring you back to a “rest and digest” state, instead of the “fight or flight” state that a scary or intense movie can lead to.
Solution: Play around with caffeine to see if/how it affects you in regards to sleep, try reading a book to reduce stimuli, or journalling/to-do lists to dump all the day’s events onto paper so you aren’t still processing them in bed.
Stay tuned for the next tip!
