Album Review #5 // HMLTD - The West is Dead (Glam Punk // 2020)
Henry Spychalski. Remember that name. This is the name of HMLTD’s vocalist. (They were previously known as Happy Meal Limited before they were instilled with fear of Ronald McDonald’s lawyers). This is a vocalist destined to be one of the best in his lane in the upcoming decade and possibly even punk’s long history. On The West is Dead, the debut album from London based group HMLTD, Spychalski pulls from a long line of great punk vocalists and brings these tracks vibrantly to life. His voice seamlessly transitions from the overt sexuality of Johnny Thunders, to the wide-eyed anxiousness of David Byrne, to the self destructive nature of Iggy Pop. The West is Dead sounds grand and epic without ever over doing the theatrics of it all and becoming annoying in the process.
The album’s title track, “The West is Dead”, starts off the track listing with a driving bassline and background beat and production that sounds like it came from the last Xiu Xiu record. If this track existed before 2012 it would’ve fit seamlessly in Tarantino’s western throwback film Django Unchained with its scratchy Gun Club inspired guitars and violent imagery. Lyrically the track is about them signing to their first label Sony “I sold my soul to the devil / ‘cause I was pretty fucking poor”. They’ve since parted ways with Sony and may I say; thank God. If this is the music Sony wouldn’t approve of releasing then Sony doesn’t deserve them ...
