My 30 day challenge starts with the why. Whilst in Barcelona on a self development course I learned about the concept of IQ, EQ, SQ and PQ so it made sense for me to base my #30daychallenge on them. BEDTIME ROUTINE

Yesterday I gave you some facts on how sleep can affect your body and how it can hinder your progress, so how can we improve our sleep? 
1. Many of us Brits love our Tea and even though tea doesn't contain as much caffeine as coffee, it still contains caffeine! Try switching to decaf tea, herbal tea or even just hot water a few hours before bed! 
2. Technology. Oh it's a wonderful thing but studies have shown that the light from our phones, laptops and televisions can keep us up later than necessary because of blue light which also contributes towards headaches. So if you're scrolling through Facebook till the early hours why not try plugging your phone in to charge on the opposite side of the room and reading a book or listening to an audio book before bed! (Make sure it's an audiobooks you can turn off without looking at a screen, alexa is good for this!!) 3. Temperature.. it will come as no surprise that room temperature plays a huge roll in helping us sleep! One minute we're too hot and need to stick a leg out, the next we're too cold and need to steal ALL the duvet from our partners! (Or turn yourself into a burrito if you sleep alone!) But having a cool room isnt the only way temperature can help us sleep! Having a hot shower or bath before getting in our pj's for 40 winks can help a lot! Studies have show that as our bodies cool off from the heat of the shower, we become lethargic and this can help us drift off quicker! 
4. If, like me, you struggle to get up in the mornings (other side of the spectrum!) Leaving a crack in your curtains or asking alexa to turn on a light at a certain time is a great way to slowly wake yourself up a little earlier! As the light turns on our body isnt rudely interrupted with loud noises or movement, we slowly come out of sleep and wake up feeling refreshed!! Here's 4 ways to help you drift off, stay asleep and get up when you need to! Why not try them tonight and catch 50 winks (because sometimes 40 isnt enough!) and come back tomorrow for more tips! 🧡

There is so much talk about the importance of a night time routine for kids, starting from a very young age.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

But as we get older and our lives become busier we put ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
less emphasis on our bed time routine and we expect to be able to be going at 1 million miles an hour all day, flop on the couch and consume a bottle of wine and binge watch the latest netflix series walk into bed and fall asleep easily and wake feeling rested.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Sounds crazy when you read it like this doesn't it?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Our bodies are made to fall asleep with ease and hit a deep restorative sleep to heal, repair and prepare. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
However, we need to support it to achieve this. We need to ensure we are winding down from the day, and have a nighttime routine where our body learns to ‘switch off’ and prepare for bed - just like when we were kids.  It can be simple;⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

✨ Use your bed for sleep and intimacy only, ditch the phones, tv, books, work and deep conversations - save them for another room in the house. Leave the bedroom for sleep and sex only. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✨ If you are not asleep after around 30 minutes get up out of bed and go into another room and do something boring or relaxing, read a book, meditate or deep breathing. Get back into bed when you are sleepy or nodding off. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✨Establish a regular waking time, weekdays and weekends, wake at the same time every day. This will help create a sleep wake cycle.
