“The temperance cause really lies at the root of all social and political progression...” wrote R. Cobden in 1849. Two years later, our movement was founded✨
We were the first international movement promoting the #alcoholfree way of life to reach development for all 🌎 For us, alcohol problems in our families, communities and societies are political.💯
Alcohol harm is still massive. Alcohol harm is causing poverty, violence, disease, destruction, death, environmental degradation and loss of productivity. It’s causing suffering. And all this is driven by an alcohol industry that ruthlessly pursues profits with unethical business practices. It’s exploitation.
👉🏽 And that is why we, our members in communities around the world, engage in political advocacy work to change policies that help create environments that are healthy and enabling.
Secondly, #sobriety or alcohol-free living is political for us, too. It means leading by example to shatter the harmful alcohol norm and build more wholesome and inclusive communities for everyone to thrive; it means to go beyond our own, individual choices about what not to consume (and what to consume instead) by supporting others, promoting solutions, raising awareness of the real effects of alcohol and by helping to expose the alcohol industry and bust alcohol myths.💥
The discourse is different today, the means of the work have obviously changed, there’s much more scientific evidence, there are different solutions but also Big Alcohol is bigger, more powerful than ever and more people are affected by alcohol harm than ever before. And so, the urgency and dedications in our members remain and the need to bring people together globally has never been greater. This is a social and global justice issue we are dealing with; as Lincoln said at one of the meetings that planted the seeds for our movement today: tackling alcohol harm is about strengthening families and preventing human suffering; it’s about ending poverty and violence; it’s about health and wellbeing; it’s about liberation and democracy and development.
