This year I came in 2nd place at the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam!
It was an absolute honour to be on that stage and to make all three rounds (I talk more about the heartfelt story on facebook). Congratulations again to the phenomenal champion @qthewriter ! I honestly didn't expect to make it as far as I did, but I had a lot of fun and am grateful I was able to let each poem live on the virtual stage.
I recorded some of my practices before finals, so I'll be posting two more videos so that folks can watch without the lag from the livestream. But you can still watch my Preliminary bout and Finals through the link in my bio!
Really, I was just hoping that I would make it to finals this year and that I could say this poem when I did. I was supposed to go to CIPS in Vancouver this April and stay with Johnny (@johnnysknifeforhire ) for part of the trip, where I'd be meeting him in person for the first time. Life happened as it did. Instead, I invited Johnny to watch the ApocaCIPS livestream (and also asked if he was okay with me saying a poem about him) and he was still able to watch the poem live!!!
This poem was born in November 2017 after getting nonchalant text from my father. Since then, the story and poem have grown and changed in funny and beautiful ways I would have never guessed. Like I told Johnny, I'm grateful the story went where it did.
Thank you to @anjalicrush for our magical conversation that prompted me to ask Johnny for a video call. Thank you to everyone else who encouraged me as well.
Thank you Johnny for being so enthusiastic and open to meeting me, for being a really cool and caring human being, and I look forward to getting to know you more as the years go on and the story develops. I feel all kinds of lucky to know you and have a whole lot of love for you.
