This gorgeous image by Le Quang Thai really made me wonder how many elderly people in our community are alone at the moment, isolated in isolation, with relatives in Sydney or further who are unable to get to them right now.
When the announcement came two Sundays ago that we would have to close our restaurant doors, obviously we were totally devastated. We were just recovering from the bushfires and the impact of a new disaster seemed unfathomable. Within minutes of the announcement a dear friend ‘of a certain age’ who we met through the restaurant phoned me. She wanted to let me know we would be fine, this too shall pass... and she loves us. I haven’t stopped thinking about her since.
I’ve just checked in with my gorgeous friend and a couple of our other elderly regulars, who often dine by themselves, to see if they need anything. This made me wonder, how many people are checking in with their elderly friends and family in the Highlands from a distance and feel a little hopeless right now?
While this may come across as product promotion, my intention is far more than that. I want to offer help to those who may not be able to help their elderly friends and family in the Highlands and are worried about them at the moment.
Why not order your elderly loved ones a meal to be delivered? Gift them some comfort food and brief human interaction? Support them and local business. From the front porch we can check the cat’s got food, take the rubbish bins out if needed, make sure there’s milk in the fridge. We don’t need to make physical contact, we can just ask a few questions and offer to help with something there and then.
Basically, if we are there dropping food off on your behalf we can most definitely ask ‘are you ok, can we do anything?’ Let’s all reach out to those who are most vulnerable in our community. A quick chat over the fence, an extra lawn mowed while you mow your own, a home cooked meal left on the porch. Small gestures will make the world of difference to someone isolating alone right now ❤️ - 31 minutes ago
