Chairs have influenced your life far more than you can imagine. They haven’t only caused all the other furniture to get in line with the height and the character of chairs, they also changed the way you dress and behave. In cultures where people sit on the floor, it is common to sit in a circle around an open space in the middle, while with chairs you usually sit in rectangular arrangement around a massive object—a table. While sitting around the table, your body is “invisible” from the chest down. Could it be that the excessively rational, or dispassionate character of our civilization correlates to a convention that serious communication excludes the body from the chest down and revolves around rectangular tables?
