Did you know?
Nestled in the northern foothills ⛰ of the Simonsberg mountains between Paarl and Stellenbosch, the deeply neglected Glen Carlou was purchased back in 1985 by the passionate visionary, Walter Finlayson.
A second generation, twice South African Wine Maker Award winner 🥇, he moulded and created the legacy that Glen Carlou holds today. With takeovers by the Swiss Hess family in 2003 followed the South African Pactolus Consortium in 2016, the winery has undergone many changes but always with the primary goal being the production of fantastic world class wines 🍷 with bold elegance and finesse.
With an art gallery 🖼 and high class restaurant 🍽 also on site, it is definitely a must for any visitor passing by.
Wine: Glen Carlou Gravel Quarry 2005. 👀 = Deep, dark ruby. 👃 = Dark, ripened fruits, with hints of mint, cedar, tobacco and dark chocolate. 👅 = Bold and voluptuous with good tannin structure. Earthy, spicy, tobacco notes backed by very subtle vegetal and dark berry nuances.
In our opinion, for a 15 year old wine that had travelled halfway around the world, it was truly beautiful and every sip took us all the way home to the wine lands as we watched the sun 🌞 disappear into the horizon.
