49/100 TAKE A BREAK
(1 of 3) When we do something we love, sometimes our biggest challenges can be slowing down or taking a break.
Being able to listen within and hear when to ease off the gas.
Being able to trust that because we take some time out we will still be able to come back to it with passion, enthusiasm and excitement.
While I’ve learned to be more mindful of and honour the ebb and flow of my creativity; knowing when to slow down and when to take breaks doesn’t come naturally to me. It’s something I am still learning to listen to, something I still question.
Previously I spoke about Stefan Sagmeister and his 7 year sabbaticals. I first learned of these over 10 years ago through his TED talk “The power of time off”. It left an impression on me. I imagined what it would be like to be able to do this myself; and contemplated how it might be possible to implement on a smaller scale. The seeds of curiosity were firmly planted.
So, being 7 weeks into my project, I’ve made an important decision- to take a break, a mini-sabbatical, which falls one day before crossing the half way mark.
I am not the first person to have the idea and take 7 week sabbaticals (I know Sean McCabe does too). I don’t take credit for its originality. I just recognise the need to implement it in my own life.
I am going to take a break for one week.
I am as yet undecided whether I will use the time to focus my efforts elsewhere, or whether to take a break entirely. I have a dilemma as another idea is also calling for my attention. I may do a mix of both; but that will be decided after I hit post on today’s piece.
Here are my current ideas:
Option 1: Take 1 week ‘off’ to take a break entirely (though still honour my long-standing daily creativity commitment each day).
Option 2: Take 1 week ‘sabbatical’ to focus on another project; then resume with 100 days of letter love.
Option 3: As option 2; then when I return create posts 5 days a week (rather than 7) to honour ‘time off’.
But as I mentioned- it’s as yet undecided; all I know is that I would like to implement a 7 week rhythm.
