While I experienced several spiritual epiphanies this past week, there were lots of social norms that we experienced as well, some that rendered undue hardships upon the family; others, that I learnt from.
Here are some do’s and donts that I’ve compiled for all of us:
- Do not visit a hospitalized patients family at home unnecessarily. While they value your moral support, they may not be in a position to clean, cook, cater to you.
- Don’t insist on visiting at the hospital, while it comes from a great place, it sometimes is a hassle for the family.
- If you absolutely have to visit, be mindful of the time, and keep your visits short, and remember, its a hospital, not a networking opportunity.
- Create a chat group and instead of constantly asking for updates, give the point person an opportunity to update you when convenient. Constantly responding to messages individually can get very emotionally taxing for one. (This was a life saver)
- Creat a system to support the family. Set up a group and decide on a food schedule. Send lunch and dinner upon a decided time and schedule every day (this is something that was wonderfully handled by my aunt’s mosque community)
- Ask “how can we help”, sometimes it maybe as simple as a ride to and from the hospital, someone to watch the kids. Other times it maybe as important as staggered coverage at the hospital with the patient.
- Put a care package together for the patient & the attendant, some socks, moisturizer, vaseline, wipes, mint may do.
- Dont give medical advice if you arent a medical professional. Trust the doctors to do their job.
