While caring can be an innate gift, empathy is a learned skill. Often, our attempts to make someone feel better are often, deep down, OUR attempt to feel better. When someone shares something painful with you do you:
1. Try to fix it?
2. Minimize their pain in an attempt to get them to look at the bright side? (See meme for example)
3. Tell them a story about a time you had it worse in order to show them it’s not that bad?
4. Just listen and ask what they need?
In terms of empathizing, the most helpful answer is #4 . Sometimes there is nothing to say to make it “better.” But a concerned ear and a hug can work wonders on the soul.
