It doesn't matter how self-sufficient we are or how confident we are in our abilities, there will still be moments when we would benefit from the counsel offered by someone with a different perspective or more experience. Being receptive to, or even seeking out, this kind of assistance doesn't make us weak, nor does it mean we are handing the power over our lives to another person; it simply means we have the wisdom to know that our horizons sometimes need expanding and that there is always more we can learn.
Our perceptions are modified by our environment and our decisions swayed by past experiences, causing us to develop strong opinions about how the world works. We settle into routines and habits. We become set in our ways. These things are part of our identity and there is nothing inherently wrong with this, but we will inevitably hurt or hold ourselves back if we become arrogant enough to believe that we have all the answers or that we don't ever need help.
As unreasonable it is, we all secretly expect ourselves to know everything. We think we should be able to independently handle whatever comes our way. We should be able to figure it out. It can't be that hard. But the truth is, sometimes it is that hard.
We get so locked into a particular way of thinking that we don't see any other alternatives. We get so far in over our heads for so long that we don't even realize how much we're struggling. We tell ourselves we're fine because we've always managed before somehow. But we're not fine...and despite what we tell ourselves, it's actually okay that we're not okay.
We don't need to have all of the answers in order to be competent. We don't have to manage everything alone to be valuable. Taking the weight of the world on our shoulders doesn't prove our worth to anyone, including ourselves. We don't have to try so hard all the time. There's almost always a helping hand being offered to us somewhere and our biggest challenge is conquered when we don't allow our pride to push that hand away.
