The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque | Abu Dhabi, UAE | Architect: Yousef Abdelky | 2007
The Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi was built in honour of the late president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who sought to create a monument that would unite the cultural diversity of the Islamic world with the historical and modern values of architecture and art. Covering an area of more than 12 hectares, it has the capacity to accommodate more than 40,000 worshippers during the holy month. The building is constructed from natural materials such as marble stone, gold, semi-precious stones, crystals and ceramics. It is certainly a very popular tourist destination - TripAdvisor named it the world’s second most favourite landmark.
