Mercedes 190E 2.5-16V Evo ll (1990-1992)
The W201 Mercedes had started out as a fairly straightforward mid-sized saloon but that all changed with the 185hp 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth. The duke company had honed its four-cylinder powerplant for racing. Their aim was to compete against the BMW’s M3 in the Deutche Tourenwagen Masters
In their aim to be competitive, the 2.3lt unit was expanded to 2.5lt in 1989 with the first Evolution-badged car.
A production run of over 500 cars enabled homologation for its DTM entry. The Evolution II followed in 1990 with that iconic body kit. It featured a massive rear wing both reduce drag and increase downforce. Added to that, it was fitted with wide arches, chunky 17-inch, six-spoke alloy wheels.
Power rose to 204hp in the roadgoing 190E 2.5-16 Coswort and this was bumped up to 333hp in the racing car. The Evolution versions came with 232hp and it could do the 0-60mph in 7.0sec.
All versions came with a complex self-levelling suspension that could be adjusted from inside the car with a switch.
