We've covered the types of resumes & which resumes work best for each career level.
Today we are going to talk about file type. The wrong file type can cause your resume to get looked over.
Your goal in submitting a resume is to demonstrate your skills and experience in the best light.
I am telling you from a Recruiter standpoint, if I have trouble opening your resume, it will be rejected.
Sending or attaching your resume in a Microsoft Word or PDF format is best.
TXT documents (saved on notepads) open up as a horizontal document, meaning that everything you've entered is on ONE LINE and someone would have to keep scrolling to the left just to read it. This results in an immediate turn down!
No recruiter or hiring manager has time to try and read that document.
A PNG or photo document is an immediate turn off as well. Attaching a photo says to the reader that you didn't want to retype your resume in a format that was more convenient for the reader.
Often times, companies have software or firewalls that block images, which means your resume in a png or photo format, won't even get read.
Additionally, if you are seeking ANY POSITION that requires a computer, having the right format can mean the difference between getting an interview and getting looked over.
Most companies are looking for people that have the ability to use Microsoft at a bare minimum. If you are unable to produce a resume in a Microsoft Word document, are you really the best candidate?
The two best file types for submitting and/or attaching a resume is a Microsoft Word file or a PDF file.
Both file types allow the reader to easily access the document.
Put your best foot forward. Take an extra hour or so to type up your resume, submit it as the correct file type, and land the interview!
