The S.E.A. Experiment (1/2) There is more to the secluded Smomulan data towers than there appears at first glance. Branching forth from the network of intertwined mana batteries, computational programs and innumerable true random number generators is one of the most ambitious technological projects in the universe's history.
The Simulated Ecosystemic Awakening Experiment, S.E.A. Experiment for short, is a secret attempt to push the limits of computational science and create Yaldev's first truly sapient artificial intelligence. Though mages claim to create new minds in the process of creating magic items, the Boundless Wisdom of Parc Pelbee tells that such minds are actually a sign of demonic posession, which makes the process both condemnable and not truly qualifying as the creation of new intelligence. That is an art for science.
The reason for the project's secrecy is in part to avoid the State's suspicion of created minds, but moreso to avoid the Church's rage toward theories of evolution. While some priests have commented on ways that fringe theories of evolved life could still be compatible with the Boundless Wisdom, the higher echelons of authority dismiss the theory as contrary to their most basic understanding about the universe.
If you could fall into the simulation running in the towers and experience it in three-dimensional space, you would plunge beneath the electron surface into an endless ocean. As you sink deeper, you would feel the calculated currents and structures made of condensed formulae. Pay close enough attention and you just might catch a glimpse of the simulation's purpose: fish.
In this simulation, a fish is a technical term for a bundle of data which attempts to survive as long as possible before it can be destroyed by predators, functions which exist to destroy other data. All fish are fundamentally the same at their core, and could all be pictured as lines of bytes that move through the simulation, but slight differences as well as sheer luck allow some to survive longer than others before they're destroyed by predators. - 1 minute ago
