Oh, this thing? It’s natural.

It’s nearly my 18 month curlsiversary and I’m feeling sentimental! Thank you so much for all the love and encouragement. And if you’re new to this space, take a moment to go follow some of my curl mentors: @reallifecurlygirl @marisascurls @curlicue_lu and @wavycurlychronicles. I would have given up a long time ago if it wasn’t for them. ❤️

Winter weather doing a number on your hair? Here are my 4 must haves for beating the winter hair woes:
1. Scalp Treatment to soothe a flaky, itchy, dry scalp, or an irritated, buildup prone, oily scalp too! Massage it into the scalp and pair it with some Rose Hair Elixir on the ends of the hair for a spa like pre-treatment before you clarify and deep condition. The scalp treatment softens any flaking or buildup and nourishes a parched and/or inflamed scalp while the hair elixir helps to protect the dryer ends of the hair from any stripping during the clarifying process. Use GOODGRAVYITSWAVY to snag these and other gorgeous @theinnatelife products at a discount! #affiliate
2. Speaking of deep conditioning, get the biggest bang for your buck by pairing your deep conditioning treatment with heat! My favorite heat cap is hand made by @curlycailin.ie and it is the first heat cap I’ve used that will heat evenly without any cold spots or bits that might burn your hair. It also is far more comfortable than the one I used from amazon and happily accommodates my big head.
3. @thepuffcuff — No more hair breakage or headaches because this humble little clamp won’t pull on your hair, yet will remain securely in place throughout the day. Also, it makes a far cuter ponytail than an elastic! Try wearing it upside down if you’re having trouble with it slipping (👋 wavy girls). Pst! I don’t have any discounts on this one, but I know many in the curly community that do like @thejoyfulwavy And @curlicue_lu so scope out their pages before shopping and support some of your curly friends while scoring a discount. They also have some cute Puff Cuff updo ideas!
4. A knit hat that also lets you show off your pineapple or ballerina bun?! Here it is! No more sacrificing fashion for comfort. You can also use code WAVY25 to grab a couple for yourself from @ponyflo while snagging a few extras as stocking stuffers for the curly girls on your shopping list! #affiliate

Greasy. Stringy. Always falling in my eyes. Not thick enough. Sticking out in all directions and “oh my gosh just-pin-them-back-already” BANGS. 😅 Intro to curly bangs was not an easy “A” for me. But now you can learn from all my missteps and tackle a curly fringe without fear! .
Here are my top 5 tips for rocking curly bangs:
1. Go thick enough. I wimped out and paid the consequences: stringy pieces of hair across my forehead. The good news is — you can always cut more! If your fringe is see through and always looking borderline greasy then you probably would benefit from going heavier.
2. Go short enough. This one is tricky because too short and curly bangs become “that story you tell to warn other people about cutting their bangs too short.” So always do the first cut dry. This is especially important the curlier your texture. I cut a few strands and used them as a guide for the rest. Just hitting the brow is the sweet spot for me.
3. Avoid putting products in them. This is especially true for those of us with oilier skin types! I quickly found that product free bangs looked fuller and lasted longer than when I used product.
4. Style them separately from the rest of your hair. This tip was gleaned from the @reallifecurlygirl YouTube curly bangs video and it has helped me avoid the wild bird in flight look. Gooooo watch it if you haven’t yet!
5. Airdry. Don’t get me wrong — I’m otherwise a die hard diffuser fan. My light waves become bouncier and curlier with every additional minute spent diffusing. But using a diffuser on my wavy bangs has resulted in fail after fail. Alternatively, I’ve started finger coiling a few pieces and maybe giving the rest a gentle scrunch, but then I just leave them alone until dry! The less I mess with them, the more they behave. 🙌
.
So take the plunge! Curly bangs are having a moment, and never was a ponytail made so effortlessly cute than the moment you cut some face framing fringe.
.
Swipe right to meet the women that inspired me to give it a shot! And a special shoutout to my girl @thejoyfulwavy for texting “DO IT” when I was wavering. 😂

Hi 👋. I’m Mary Ann. And I love cutting my hair. I plan on growing it out, but I also love switching up the shape. .
I’m a moderately early grey-er, and only two years ago fully quit my decade long habit of tweezing my silvers (ouch).
.
I like wearing my hair straight (it’s easy). And I love wearing it wavy (makes me feel unique). I don’t plan on giving up either one.
.
I drive a minivan, homeschool three littles, and wear lots of ponytails and hats. Oh, and @bizzybcrafts headbands have my heart.
.
I’m not great at Instagram, and I frequently take breaks to remind my broken vain heart that likes and followers and compliments don’t define me. Also, I’m terribly long winded in my captions. .
I love hair. I love how versatile and fun it is. And I love that it often becomes a jumping off point for deeper conversations about what’s real, and good, and important. I’m really Thankful for all the kindness, encouragement, and support you all have shown me. Thanks for coming along for the ride. And a very very Happy Thanksgiving to all celebrating! 🦃

“Safe straightening of curly hair.” It’s an oxymoron, right?? It’s true that high heat damages hair period, whether it’s heat from a curling iron, a straightening iron, or a blowdryer and diffuser. But for many of us, airdrying or diffusing on cool every day (or every washday) of our lives is either unappealing or just downright a NO for our lifestyle. So how can you protect your hair during the occasional blowouts or hot diffusing sessions? Use a heat protectant! It’s true that no heat protectant will prevent all heat damage, but it can help reinforce the structure of the hair and diminish water loss from the inner cortex. And the good news is, you may not even need to find a new product! A decent heat protectant might be sitting in your shower right now. Check your leave in conditioners for protein, humectants (like glycerin, panthenol, or honey), and fatty acids and oils. The protein helps to reinforce the structure of the hair, while the humectants and fats help with moisture retention. If a cream leave in weighs your hair down, try a spray! The @w2naturals leave in spray from their Gorgeous Collection has all three of the above and never weighs my hair down. Even better news: you can use my code ITSWAVY10 for a 10% discount! #affiliate (snag the Gorgeous Collection shampoo and conditioner too for the complete washday, or the Curls Oh Curls Cream and Gel Power Mousse for a bomb curly look 🙌). . . .
So make this curly hair thing work FOR YOU. If the healthiest curls possible is your goal, nix the heat, and baby the heck outta your hair. If saving some time or switching up your look gives you joy? Do it! Make this about you and it will be so much more fun and sustainable.
. . .
And check out @curlicue_lu for a great “gentle blowout” tutorial for days when a sleeker look without lots of high heat fits the bill. 👍

“That’s why her hair is so big — it’s full of secrets.” And it’s time to spill them! Here are my top 10 secre—*er— tips for turning up the vOLUME📢:
.
1. Avoid heavy oil and butter laden stylers and conditioners. Great for softening, retaining moisture, and taming flyaways, but pure murder for volume creation and maintenance. Depending on your climate/water/season/hairtype you might even use a light rinse out conditioner and then entirely skip the leave in and cream, opting for water based stylers like mousses and gels.
.
2. Avoid putting heavy products anywhere near your roots (conditioners, leave-ins, creams, moisturizing gels, serums, lotions, or custards).
.
3. Clarify. If your hair feels grimy, dirty right from the shower, stringy, or limp, you may have buildup squelching your volume potential (my favorite is the the @myhairdance clarifying shampoo with ACV, but I also love @giovannicosmetics TTTT shampoo, or @moptophair detox shampoo).
.
4. Rinse out your conditioner, apply your stylers, and diffuse all while upside down.
.
5. Damp styling. Water helps with definition and curl clumping, but can weigh down finer hair types. Use a cotton t shirt or microfiber towel (the one by @theperfecthaircare is my favorite) to remove excess moisture from the hair before adding additional stylers and diffusing.
.
6. Alternate warm then cold air when you diffuse your roots to help set them heading away from the scalp.
.
7. Begin and end your diffusing routine by focusing on your roots, then root clip in between to help retain the volume you created.
.
8. Hairspray for extra hold and grit at the root (favorites are @curlkeeper Tweak and @bouncecurl hairspray).
.
9. Dry shampoo. @myhairdance has been my fave for 2 years now. It’s 100% CG friendly and lasts for ages.
.
10. Finish your style with a good root massage, fluffing, and a deep side part, and then use a hair pick to create some extra volume growing functional frizz! .
What have I missed? Spill any additional #bighairdontcare tips in the comments! (curl separating, short layers...)

Boo! 👻 Bangs + a curly shag! ✂️ . . .
If you’ve been following my stories, you know I gave myself a “stress cut” recently and freaked out because straightened it was a straight up Florence Henderson style mom-mullet. But good news! Curls are forgiving and hair grows. I also found out that curly bangs are what’s been missing from my life. .
So if you’ve been saying, “I’m not _____ enough to pull off _____.” Don’t let fear hold you back! Curls are forgiving, and hair grows. .
Happy Halloween! 🎃 .
Washed and styled with all @moptophair gentle shampoo, daily conditioner, leave-in, not yet released super secret curl cream 🤫😜, and their medium hold salon gel.

“... to straighten my hair?”
“... to brush it?” “... to use a non-CG approved product?”
“... to wash as frequently as I want?”
“... to skip the leave in?” “... to decided I don’t have the time?”
“... to quit and try again later?” “... to hate how my hair looks?”
“... use only drugstore products?”
“... to use a medicated shampoo?” YES! The Curly Girl Method is just that: a method. Not a religion, an exclusive club, or a cult. It’s a set of suggestions born out of a boat load of curly hair experience, and it can change your hair! But you need to make this about YOU. Your hair. Your lifestyle. Your budget. Your goals. Your preferences. Your values. Your time.
Are there any CG guidelines you routinely break in order to make the method work for you?

Dying for some definition? Here are my top 10 tips for maxing out your hair’s definition potential: .
1. Reach for products with hold — especially gel. Hard hold gels in particular are good at forming a cast around the hair as they dry, helping to protect the curl and hold it in place until it dries.
2. Experiment with product amount. Less product often results in a more voluminous look, while extra product usually encourages a more defined curl.
3. Clarify, protein, and deep condition. It’s the triple whammy reset for struggling curls.
4. Experiment with product application techniques like the #doubleapplication method (see @reallifecurlygirl), or as @thejoyfulwavy coined it “The Arnold Palmer” 😂, #123gel (see @honestlizhere), The Smasters Technique, finger coiling (see @hif3licia), and the bowl method (see @powerdomi). All of them were designed to pump up your hair’s clumping and curl potential.
5. Apply stylers when your hair is dripping wet. Definition requires hair clumping, and hair clumps best in the presence of water, especially a lot of it!
6. Glaze and scrunch the product into your hair. Raking or combing often stretches and breaks up a looser curl pattern. Adding water and product can help bring them back, but some waves just don’t recover. Experiment to see what works best for you!
7. Pixie diffuse: with the diffuser off place it on curls, turn it on, hold it in place for a while, then turn off before moving it to the next spot. @reallifecurlygirl has a great styling video on YouTube that demos pixie diffusing and The Smasters Technique.
8. Airdry. Some hair types respond really well to air-drying, or a combo of diffusing and airdrying. My favorite is to pixie diffuse for 15 minutes, airdry until mostly dry, then finish with a another 5 minutes of diffusing.
9. Hands off your curls while they dry. The more you touch them, the more frizz you create.
10. Wait to SOTC once your hair is 110% dry! RIP to all the waves I destroyed by SOTC too early.🤪 .
New to the game or stuck in a styling rut? See @curlicue_lu @ingecurls @curly_n_fab and @coffeecurlygirl for more great styling videos and tips! .

Most every washday I scrunch in my stylers (usually a mousse or custard followed by a gel) on soaking wet hair, gently microplop with my @theperfecthaircare towel which removes a lot of water cutting down on drying time, diffuse/airdry/diffuse to dry, and finish by scrunching out the gel cast. But on days when I have the extra time ***shivers — a LUXURY 🤪*** I like to add in a few extras; methods that add to my total styling time, but result in extra shine, definition, volume, and shrinkage. These extras include a double application of gel: once when my hair is soaking wet (like I always do), and then again after microplopping while it’s just damp. I use a satin scarf to scrunch out the excess water, leaving more of it in my hair, this leads to longer diffusing times but much more curl definition. I also like to take my time diffusing by starting out on warm, then switching to cool and finally cold while holding the dryer in each section for up to 30 second to help set the waves (I call this #123diffusing). Overall, the more I diffuse, the more curl I get! Then, when I feel a cast starting to form, I do one last light application of gel (this is called The Smasters Technique) by wetting my hands and grazing the gel over the canopy — major frizz reduction and truly amps up the definition. And finally, PATIENCE at the end and NO scrunching out the crunch until my hair is 1000% dry. Seriously. SOTC early ruins more hairdays for me. I mostly live in buns, ponytails, braids, and the “essentials” washday hair, but it’s so nice to know I can pull out all the stops for weddings and date nights. What about you? Do you have any “extras” that you pull out for special occasions?

I also like to take my time diffusing by starting out on warm, then switching to cool and finally cold while holding the dryer in each section for up to 30 second to help set the waves (I call this #123diffusing ). Overall, the more I diffuse, the more curl I get! I have LOVED rockin a short bob for the last year, but I’m slowly growing out the shortest back layers so that I can try out something new: length + waves! Some of y’all have already mentioned how sad this makes you — and I totally get that! I have loved learning from other short haired wavies like @reallifecurlygirl and feeling very much a part of the “short hair can be beautiful” club. 😆 But I like change. I miss my pineapple. And I’m just ... CURIOUS. So here we go! It’s almost shoulder length, and with the help of a bobby pin or two I can almost throw it up in a pineapple at long last! I do more airdrying now to cut down on styling time, and I’m obsessing less over perfect back-head-hair. I’ve been leaning heavily on updos (bless you @engleallthewavy for the constant inspiration 😚) and @bizzybcrafts headbands during the grow out phase. Have you ever grown out a short cut before? Are you considering a big chop? Any tips to share?

Oh my goodness I missed y’all! What is happening? How’s the “hair journey” going? What have I missed?? Personal note: life is so so good right now. Homeschooling the girls is going great. The season of gourds, and holidays, and camping, and soup, and hiking, and sweaters is upon us and I am HERE FOR IT. My hair has taken a major (but appropriate and life giving) backseat to my family and my health. The waves are lose, the frizz is real, and the updos are numerous. But I’m here, happy, missing you daily, and hoping you’ll forgive me for popping in only occasional during this life season. ❤️ (((hair deets: @myhairdance hydrating shampoo and conditioner, @jessicurl confident coils, @giovannicosmetics la styling gel, and @curlkeeper — all faves!)))
