John Gollings

Australian based photographer specialising in architecture and cultural projects in Sth East Asia for publications, exhibitions and prints.

The Denton Corker Marshall Adelphi Hotel swimming pool in 1993 and my first digital retouching job. The yellow wall was incomplete at that stage but public interest was running hot to see DCM’s own hotel with it’s cantilevered rooftop pool over Flinders Lane so some friends splashed about in the pool and I shot it from Toronto House where we lived. I finished the wall with my new Apple Mac Quadra.
I’d been longing for control over my architectural pictures so bought the first Mac Quadra and Photoshop 2 as soon as they were released.
To their credit DCM worked with me and supported a lot of my digital innovation through the 80’s with project visualisation and I still operate a high end scanner today, drawing on my own film archive of pre 2005 analog work. My archive holds every picture I’ve ever taken since I was 10.

These 1989 aerials of the Island of Nauru, photographed from an Air Nauru Boeing 727 at 20,000’, were some of my earliest aerial photography and set the style for much of my later work. I shot these through an open cockpit window, wearing an oxygen mask, with the stall warning horn blaring.
The black and white images, also from 1989, are of the devastation caused by the phosphate mining on the island by Britain, Australia and Germany. Reparations were finally paid after these images went to the International Court of Justice.
So small is the island of Nauru that the airstrip runs across almost the full width of the island as seen in the top of the first image.

Congratulations to Air Nauru/Nauru Airlines on its 50th anniversary from both myself and Helen Bogdan, Nauru Government’s International Public Affairs Consultant.
These rare 1970 shots from my archive are of the airline’s inaugural flight on a Dassault Falcon 20 with President Hammer DeRoburt on board.
Some of my earliest aerial photography was made from their later Boeing 727 at 20,000’ through an open cockpit window. I had to wear an oxygen mask and had the stall warning horn on whilst I shot the destruction from the phosphate mining by Britain, Australia and Germany. Reparations were finally paid when these images went to the International Court of Justice. Helen bogdan was instrumental in all the advertising and promotion of the Pacific destinations in which Nauru took leadership.
The final image is of President Hammer DeRoburt and Buraro Detudamo boarding the first flight.

Fire is both the life force of our universe and an avenging angel in our community. It renders the earth visible below the tree canopy and has no mercy for those who tempt their fate.
I’ve never shot any actual fires before, despite nearly 40 years of photographing them. I’ve always been more interested in documenting the aftermath. This aerial night shoot was of the inaccessible fires around Cann River last week and the only way to grasp both the number of separate fires and the scale and ferocity of them.
Many thanks to pilot Jon Clements in his very fast Bonanza, crossing Victoria in one night of brilliant flying and aerobatic positioning for my camera.
Swipe for more images.

A decade ago, on Saturday 7th February 2009, Victoria was devastated by the Black Saturday bushfires. Days later my chopper pilot, who had been helping with the water bombing, flew me across the original track of the fire. I was shocked by the decimation of the landscape, transformed into little more than a gallimaufry of graphic patterns.
.
‘877.00m E 145° 12' 31.12'S 037° 25' 15.95', 2009’ (the coordinates include the elevation of the helicopter above sea level) is now in the Janet Holmes à Court Collection and was a rare colour image in a black and white shoot.
.
Now in 2020 Australia is on fire. It’s a national disaster and our government needs to step up with a permanent solution. A program to reduce bush fires in the short term and a complete long term revision of our climate change policy is needed urgently.

If you can help by making a donation, these agencies will directly help victims or firefighters.

With courage, research and technology, Six Degrees Architects have wrought wonders to the Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney Griffin Capitol Theatre, now owned by RMIT.
The theatre is one of the world’s greatest Art Deco Interiors. I’ve been documenting it for many years, so know it well, but it was a real thrill to see the skilled restoration and reactivation complete.
The Six Degrees team have been respectful but not intimidated by the demands of the theatre and with the new LED lighting installed have succeeded in creating a completely new theatrical experience.
The last image is of the original interior taken in 1999. It was a struggle to make it evocative. The ceiling lights were in a bad way and it needed careful exposure to give the illusion of the 1924 designed spectacle.

An infrared version of the Robin Boyd Walsh St House tree, as per the previous post, revealing minute signs of life via a chlorophyll response.
You can read more about it, and watch the video ‘A Tree to Remember’, on the Robin Boyd Foundation website.

I’d sooner see a building demolished than a tree; such a symbol of regeneration, hope and sustainability.
Sadly this 120 year old Monterey Pine, incorporated by Robin Boyd into the design of his iconic Walsh St House, has reached the end of it’s life and died. The tree has been well documented and, as it is now putting both the house itself and pedestrians at risk, will be removed in early 2020. Much of the tree will be put aside for future projects continuing to provide joy way past it’s own lifespan.

Congratulations to Wolfgang Marx, his evocative photograph ‘Misty Morning’ was the winner of the best image at the Camberwell Camera Club Annual Awards.
Judging the award, alongside Peter Walton, I was very impressed by the quality of all the entries.

Ironically I do more work out of Melbourne, so it seems appropriate that my Monash Gallery of Art exhibition, The History of the Built World, is now on simultaneously in both Bengaluru and Sydney (which happens to look more like India every day).
I hope it’s worth a look even if only to see the world’s oldest piece of architecture from 30,000 years ago, recently found in Central Australia.
Many thanks to Sydney Living Museums for showing the exhibition.

New Zealand is the hot country at the moment and James Grose and BVN Architecture have just added to it’s glory, winning a major award at the World Architecture Festival in Amsterdam.
Designed in association with Jasmax, Smales Farm B:Hive in Auckland, the largest co-working space in the Southern Hemisphere, is the winner of the Offices category in the 2019 INSIDE World Festival of Interiors.
A most worthy winner for its collaborative work space, putting people and wellness at it’s core, within a rational, energy efficient skin around a memorable organic interior. The excavated atrium of the five level building also houses a vibrant hospitality precinct.

MPavilions 2014 – 2019
What a dilemma trying to choose between these buildings; like separating your children.
Having documented each one it’s the first question I’m asked.
Each has been deeply thought about with individual strengths. Maybe it’s impossible to rank them.

2014 Sean Godsell
2015 Amanda Levete
2016 Studio Mumbai. Bijoy Jain
2017 OMA. Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten
2018 Estudio Carme Pinós
2019 Glenn Murcutt

Congratulations to Hassell, Cox Architecture and HKS Architects. Optus Stadium has won two more global awards, the 2019 Silver IOC IAKS Award and the IPC IAKS Distinction, the two awards considered the most important international architecture prizes for sports, leisure and recreational facilities.
It’s always an honour and a challenge to document a major public building. A sports stadium is possibly the hardest, aligning weather, time and events to coincide. And keeping the photographer out of the shot.

Congratulations to Pascale Gomes-McNabb and Cumulus Inc on winning the Hall of Fame Award at the Eat Drink Design Awards.
In the fast and fashionable world of haute cuisine only a few touch the zeitgeist and remain in vogue. Through logic and pragmatism Cumulus Inc is an effortless winner. It’s charm is in it’s lack of pretension and the quality of both food and service.
So thrilled for you Pascale. A brilliant and well deserved award!

When the Naomi Milgrom Foundation meets Glenn Murcutt, the Pritzker Prize winner, with a commission for a temporary pavilion there is an expectation of something sublime, original and challenging. This year’s MPavilion delivers exactly that.
With the clarity of an aircraft wing and a white translucent fabric affording a lantern both day and night, Melburnians are in for a treat this summer.
