Photo by @gabrielegalimbertiphoto | Abel, 4, Nopaltepec, Mexico. Take a moment and think back to your childhood, the era in your life when the only thing you knew about a bill was that it was a bird’s equivalent of lips, and your day job was to construct fantastical worlds with your favorite toys. In my Toy Stories series, I explore the connection between children and their toys, an insight into their tiny worlds and a trip down memory lane. Toy Stories is the result of a 30-month trip in which I visited more than 50 countries and took photographs of children and their favorite toys. I would often take part in play or a game prior to arranging the toys for the photograph. Despite some differences, I found more similarities among children living worlds apart. Even in different countries, toys had the same function, such as protecting them from dangers and things they feared in the night. Toys haven’t changed all that much since I was a kid. I’d often find the kind of toys I used to have. It was nice to go back to my childhood. | Follow me @gabrielegalimbertiphoto for more photos and stories. #toys #play #kids #child #children

Photo by @andy_bardon | Professional snowboarder Maddie Mastro has a quiet moment of concentration before competing in a halfpipe competition at X Games Aspen in Colorado. Positive visualization and a few words with her coach, James Jackson, helped get her ready to compete. The halfpipe event is one of the most-viewed competitions, where athletes charge down a 600-foot long, 22-foot high frozen feature, launching themselves in a choreographed performance. See more images from the X Games from Sofia Jaramillo and I over on @natgeoadventure. @xgames

Photo by @amytoensing | Carter Ness hunts with his father and brother for wood duck on land owned by the American Prairie Reserve (APR) along the Judith River near Winifred, Montana. APR, an independent, nonprofit organization, is working to rewild a large swath of the northern plains, removing cattle, reestablishing native vegetation, and helping lost wildlife return and thrive. APR welcomes hunters and hikers on its properties, which opens new access points to public lands along local rivers. In February issue, the story “Prairie Divide” looks at this conservation project and how it’s impacting the land and the people who live there.

Photo by @davidalanharvey | Rodanthe, North Carolina, December 14, 2019. Not much left of Mirlo Beach, and after every hurricane or nor’easter we all rush to see if this time it’s all gone. The sea wants to break through at this spot and create a new inlet to the sound. Inlets come and go on these barrier islands, some lasting a hundred years or more and some just a hundred days. Either way, it's a finger snap in geologic time. This is from my Outer Banks series Come Hell or High Water.

Photo by Robbie Shone @shonephoto | This is a view of the entrance to the Geltenbach Hoehle cave as a Swiss team of explorers begin their decent into the Gastental valley below. During the summer months, a giant waterfall spills from the entrance—only in the winter is it safe to explore the cave.

Video by @joelsartore | Gigi, a two-week-old snow monkey, clings to one of her favorite stuffed animals @blankparkzoo. Stuffed toys like this one are often used by zookeepers caring for young primates to keep infants from imprinting on humans. In doing so, they can ensure that babies like Gigi are successfully adopted by the rest of the troop once they are fully weaned. To see a still of Gigi and an adult snow monkey, follow me @joelsartore. #snowmonkey #baby #cute #PhotoArk #savetogether

Photo by Michael Yamashita @yamashitaphoto | Don’t worry, this is not self-immolation. Jumping over fire, to purify and rid yourself of bad luck, is a tradition that takes place on the final day of Chinese New Year celebrations during what is known as Yuan Xiao (Lantern Festival). #Lanzhou #Gansu #China #ChineseNewYear #LanternFestival
